ARA Galiano (DD-1924)

Return to Argentine Ships

These light destroyers were built for Argentina in the Germanic States and were supposed to be the replacements for the Rio type destroyers but those were refurbished and kept as escorts.

The Galiano type were a new development for the German shipbuilders as before they had been designing destroyers and torpedo boats for the North Sea and Baltic Sea areas. Now the designs could operate in any sea area.

With two 4.1" single shielded mounts fore and aft there were some complaints that the ships were undergunned but the enhanced torpedo armament over other ships of their size made them a force to be reckoned with. The light AA provided was adequate for their size. High speed was necessary for the ships to attain their aim, get close to ships larger than them and torpedo the s%$t out of them.
